My sister and I were
typical sisters even though she had Osteogenesis Imperfecta or “the brittle
bone disease.” We would laugh together,
cry together, and well, like all siblings do, we fought. She was sooooooo bossy!!! When I was old enough to baby-sit her, no one
believed me how demanding she was and threatening me to get things for her or
she would get me in trouble! I had to
record her on her own CD/Tape player to have evidence! How could a 5 year old, that couldn’t walk
make a 10 year old mortified to the point of having to do everything you’re
told or you knew you would get in trouble.
I was the big sister, I was supposed to be the one in charge… geez.
One
of my favorite memories of us growing up happened during some scary
nights. Growing up, our bedrooms were at
the same end of the house, next to each other’s. On that particular side of the house were
trees about 20 feet away. Tall, skinny trees
that swayed wildly in the wind on stormy nights. Neither of us particularly enjoyed storms…
matter of fact, we were terrified of them; mainly due to the thought of a tree
falling on the house during said storm.
During one of the storms of my childhood, my sister yelled for me. I went to her room and she asked me to stay
with her. I carefully cleaned off her
bed and even more carefully (because she had a water bed) laid with her all
night. It was during those storms that
the bond of our sisterhood was formed.
From then on, every time I heard the first crack of thunder, I made a
beeline for her room. We would pray
together that God would put his guardian angels around us and keep us from all
harm.
